Building upon our extensive experience delivering projects for the Home Office, we partnered with Capgemini to provide expert user-centred design capability to the department. Supporting agile, data-driven and cost-effective delivery.
The Home Office is responsible for ensuring national security, maintaining public safety and overseeing immigration and border control. There are a broad range of digital services that have been developed to help support these areas.
To support delivery of these services, the Home Office has been building a strong user-centred design (UCD) function of over 250 people. Helping bring a UCD approach to designing their products and services in collaboration with the people who will use them.
The Home Office is implementing a long-term change programme to lead the transformation of their Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) function, to support their digital future. They wanted to improve their resourcing approach and improve alignment of UCD work to the DDaT profession and their preferred methodologies.
In doing so, they also wanted to be able to provide technology which:
To help achieve these goals, we partnered with Capgemini to deliver additional UCD support. Strengthening the Home Office’s digital capabilities and helping create “simple, clear, and joined-up user experiences” for public service users.
Building upon our extensive experience delivering user-centred projects for the Home Office, we’ve provided roles across content design, user research, interaction design and content design. Placing UCD at the heart of the Home Office's digital transformation, while supporting an agile, data-driven and cost-effective approach to delivery.
Because of the nature of the Home Office’s remit, we’ve needed to provide specialists who thrive when working on complex and challenging projects. With subject matter ranging from immigration, to policing to terror prevention, they also needed to be security cleared. And owing to the fluctuating nature of the Home Office’s needs, we’ve needed to deploy these talented individuals within tight timeframes.
We’ve been able to draw on our network of expert associates, all with extensive experience of delivering digital services across the public sector. This previous experience, often within the Home Office, means they’ve been able to get up to speed quickly and immediately provide value to the teams they’ve supported.
“The Home Office UCD practitioners are very collaborative, kind and helpful, so it was great sharing ideas and learnings." Marvell UCD associate
In the 2 years of our partnership, we’ve placed over 10 associates, working across more than 10 different portfolios within the Home Office. They’ve been helping to ensure a range of discoveries, alphas, betas and live services are user-focused and easy to use.
One of our associates worked on a discovery for an AI-powered webchat. The role involved preparing style guidelines, designing patterns and writing and reviewing content for webchats. Translating complex guidance into simple language and ensuring it met accessibility and reading standards. Our associate really valued being embedded in the Home Office’s UCD community. She said “they’re very collaborative, kind and helpful, so it was great sharing ideas and learnings. The regular UCD sessions and crits are always interesting to be a part of.”
Another of our associates was working on the beta phase of a service for sponsoring foreign nationals to work or study in the UK. She helped improve navigation, simplify language and align content across multiple products. While developing and defining supporting content strategies. A stakeholder at the Home Office said about our associate: “Her knowledge and ability to clearly represent the needs of users in stakeholder meetings was a huge asset. She grasped the details of the project quickly and shared knowledge generously.”
“[The associate's] knowledge and ability to clearly represent the needs of users in stakeholder meetings was a huge asset.” Stakeholder, Home Office
Our current two-year engagement is scheduled to conclude in early 2026. Following a new procurement activity, we are eager to continue supporting the Home Office in achieving their 2030 digital strategy. Ensuring services are truly user-centred and driving the future development of the digital, data and technology profession within government.
Whether you’re ready to start your project now or you just want to talk things through, we’d love to hear from you.
